FSI direct fuel injection technology brings these benefits to virtually all the petrol engines in the Audi range, in many cases in combination with turbo charging for optimum response. More power, less fuel FSI technology increases the torque and output of petrol engines, making them up to 15% more economical and with reduced exhaust emissions. The dimensions and harmonisation of the combustion chamber design, combined with the airflow and injection rate, results in more power being squeezed out of every drop of fuel. FSI – how it works With FSI technology, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The injector regulates the amount of fuel with millisecond precision at injection pressures of between 30 and 110 bar. During the injection process, the evaporating fuel has a significant cooling effect on the cylinder charge. This contributes to improved cylinder charging and enhanced engine output. The cooling effect also helps reduce the engine’s tendency to knock. This reduction means that the compression ratio of FSI engines can be set considerably higher than for engines with conventional injection systems. The engines of the FSI family are fitted with a two-stage variable intake manifold. The power mode (short duct length) contributes to the high specific power output of the engines at high engine speeds. At low revs, the long duct length setting is selected increasing the maximum torque by more than 15%. With the aid of a flap system in the intake duct, the in-cylinder flow can be optimally adjusted. In part-load operation, a strong flow ensures low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. At full load, the air is drawn in with minimal losses, meaning that torque and output are increased. TFSI engines Audi is the first manufacturer in the world to combine direct injection FSI technology with forced induction in volume production. The exceptionally broad torque plateau of the TFSI engine on the one hand permits a fuel-efficient driving style with few gearshifts, and on the other hand means that only light accelerator is needed to produce impressive thrust. TDI engines TDI explained TDI engine technology made its debut in 1989. Audi presented the world’s first production car diesel engine with turbo charging, direct injection and electronic management at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Turbodiesel technology with direct injection went on to become a major success. Today, Audi TDI engines featuring the latest common rail injection technology are as notable for their power and refinement as they are for their exceptional economy. Their great advantage is plentiful torque that is available from low revs, making for strong and easily accessible performance, coupled of course with remarkable cruising range. This choice blend continues to make TDI variants the most popular in every Audi model range that offers this option. Common rail system explained In TDI engines equipped with the common rail system, all cylinders are located on a single high-pressure rail. This rail is an accumulator, which is supplied by a pump and stores the fuel at a pressure of up to 2,000 bar – the equivalent of the weight of a luxury saloon car on the space of one square centimetre. Thanks to the high pressure and a very fine bore diameter of only one tenth of a millimetre in the nozzle, the injectors achieve very fine atomisation of the fuel. This ensures excellent mixture preparation and highly efficient combustion, which delivers greater power, low emissions and low fuel consumption. And that's exactly the case with the revised TT - in particular the popular 2.0 TFSI version. It appears the best just got even better. It's now powered by a fresh 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, the same one that's used in the latest Volkswagen Golf GTI, so the TT is certainly in good company. Power increases slightly from 200bhp to 211bhp which helps bring the 0-62mph down by half a second. But this is mainly due to the impressive improvement in pulling power which is boosted with an extra 70Nm of torque. Out on the road you'd be hard pressed to notice the extra power unless you drove the previous version before jumping into the improved model, but it does feel more sprightly low down. The engine doesn't need to be worked quite as hard in order to tap into the power, but still delivers that superbly rewarding exhaust note. But where you will notice the difference is at the pumps. Despite the extra power, this newer TFSI engine is actually more economical and is capable of an average 42.8mpg compared to 36.7mpg before. Emissions have also dropped considerably, meaning cheaper road tax. Although if it's outright economy you're after, the TT TDI is the model to go for - it can return a mightily impressive 53.3mpg. The standard two-wheel drive version we tested has no problems transferring all that power to the tarmac and it always feels composed and planted to the road. It can occasionally struggle for grip in the wet, for instancing when pulling out of a junction, but on the open road it's reassuring and hugely enjoyable to drive. A four-wheel drive quattro version is available for an extra £3,000 and it does add an extra element in terms of confidence behind the wheel, but the standard two-wheel drive model is more than good enough. The six-speed manual gearbox has a wonderfully positive shift while the small but chunky steering wheel adds to the sports feeling in the cabin. One neat optional extra is the 'Sport' button by the gear lever which allows you to alter the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal, the weight of the steering and even makes the exhaust note better. From the outside the changes are best described as 'subtle'. There's a slightly tweaked front bumper with deeper air intakes while at the back a new diffuser has been incorporated into the rear bumper. The sporty S line versions get LED daytime running lights first seen on the R8, while there are new alloy wheel designs available too. So can you improve on perfection? It seems Audi has come pretty close to achieving it with the latest TT. It's still as great to drive as before, while the new engine's improvements in economy and CO2 are what really stand out. While the TTS and TT RS are hugely entertaining, we think this is the star of the TT range and the best value version too. For the in-depth Audi TT Coupe review, click here. From the R8 supercar to the new clubsport quattro, the German models radiate style and desirability from every angle. All TT Roadsters use lightweight Audi Space Frame technology, which means that 58 per cent of the body is made from aluminium and 42 per cent is steelAnd the new TT Roadster is a fine example. As with the coupé version, its famous shape has been carefully evolved for the second-generation model, with edgier lines giving it a more up-to-date look. But if you're in the market for one, which engine should you go for? In the coupé, it's the entry-level 2.0T FSI, not the range-topping 3.2-litre V6, that's your best bet. So is the same true of the Roadster? Pumping out 197bhp and 280Nm of torque, the four-cylinder turbocharged motor is the same unit as used by Volkswagen's Golf GTI and SEAT's hot Leon FR. And it's a cracking powerplant. Propelling the Roadster from 0-62mph in only 6.7 seconds and on to 147mph, it's hardly any slower than the 3.2-litre V6. The positive shift of the six-speed manual transmission enhances in-gear throttle response, and overtaking ability is strong. What's more, the addition of twin balancer shafts means the engine is smooth right up to its 7,000rpm red line. It's economical as well, posting a combined fuel consumption figure of 36.2mpg - which compares well with the V6's 27.2mpg. There are further benefits when it comes to handling. All TT Roadsters use lightweight Audi Space Frame technology, which means that 58 per cent of the body is made from aluminium and 42 per cent is steel. But by doing without the V6's quattro drivetrain, the front-wheel-drive 2.0T FSI is even lighter, tipping the scales at 1,295kg - that's 175kg less than its more powerful brother. Factor in a chassis which is much stiffer than its predecessor's - with no scuttle shake or vibration through the interior mirror - and the result is a machine that is extremely agile and great fun to drive. Unlike the old TT Roadster, which could feel rather numb, the new model is much more involving, with direct steering, excellent body control and lots of grip. There is even a fair degree of throttle adjustability, with a mid-corner lift of the accelerator tucking the nose in neatly. Compared to the quattro model, traction suffers a little in the wet, particularly when accelerating out of junctions, but that's the only real negative. If you can afford it, the £1,150 Magnetic Ride option is worth specifying. This set-up features dampers filled with a magnetic fluid which reacts to an electrical charge, and their stiffness can be changed in milliseconds to adapt to different road surfaces and driving styles. In Normal mode, the model has an amazingly smooth ride, but select Sport from a button by the gearlever, and the car becomes instantly stiffer, with less body roll through corners. While the clever dampers aren't standard, a whole host of equipment is, including the brilliant electrically-operated, fully automatic fabric roof, which folds away in only 12 seconds at speeds of up to 19mph. Once in place, the hood offers excellent refinement when it's raised. However, it has to be said that the thick fabric does compromise visibility, especially at the rear. The TT Roadster also comes with a pop-up wind deflector, which reduces buffeting when on the move, a sophisticated climate control system and a high-quality stereo. Combined with a classy - if rather cramped - cabin that offers a sporty, low-slung driving position and first-class materials, and the TT is a great place in which to spend time. The 250-litre boot is also pretty handy for a two-seater drop-top. There's no doubt that this 2.0T FSI model is the best of the bunch. Provided you don't start to tick too many options boxes - the model we tried came with satellite navigation, xenon headlights and 20-spoke alloy wheels, which bumped the price up to well over £30,000 - it represents excellent value for money. And the good news is that it promises to be a strong residual performer, too. Factor in the driving experience, and you've got a car that goes as well as it looks. This entry-level 2.0T FSI is far better to drive than the V6 version, and it's £4,600 cheaper, too. With a brilliant folding roof, plenty of standard kit and some of the sharpest looks in the sector, it's a great sporting convertible that's sure to be a success. The only downsides are a slightly cramped cabin and poor roof-up visibility - other than that, the TT Roadster is a winner. AT A GLANCE Cabin is stylish and comfortable, but it's snug, and the grey leather may not suit all tastes. Squared-off steering wheel and slick gearbox help make the Roadster a more enjoyable car to drive than its predecessor. The TT-RS which debut next year attacks directly the Cayman S Andrew heyman 2 years ago i like this audi tt 2.0 it would be fast around corners but can it compete with the porsche cayman s maybe someday we will see it giving the porsche cayman s a real fight. the audi tt's wieght is a good start it only wieghs 2882LBS but it just needs more power. Fastestlaps.com 2006-2010 RSS Feed || Road test: Audi TT Coupe 2.0 TFSI quattro Sport S tronic The TT comes with a choice of four engines: a 160hp 1.8 TFSI, a 170hp 2.0 TDI, the new 211hp 2.0 TFSI and a 272hp TTS. I drove the new petrol 2.0 TFSI which has 11hp more than the old 2.0 motor and coincidentally produces the same 350NM (258lb/ft) of torque as the petrol TTS and diesel TDI engines. Significantly, the new 2.0 TFSI’s peak torque is produced both at lower rpm and over a wider rev range than the TTS’s and even the TDI’s. Unsurprisingly, this fine spread of beefy torque makes itself very evident on the road with strong acceleration always on tap. The new 4cyl TFSI turbo is smooth and sounds crisp, and its 5.6 sec 0-62 time and 150mph max are also impressive. The on-the-road price for the TT Coupé 2.0 TTFSI quattro with the S tronic dual clutch transmission is £29,420. in addition to the options already mentioned, my test TT also had 10-spoke alloys (£1,250), powered front seats (£725), an extended leather pack (£335), ‘Scuba Blue’ paint (£500 – black or white are the only two no-cost colours) and more, all of which hiked the price to £36,265. On the plus side fuel consumption is quoted at 39.2mpg (combined) along with CO2 emissions of 169g/km (tax band H/£250). Whichever way you look at it, almost 40mpg from a 150mph sports car is pretty impressive, even if official mpg figures are hard to achieve in day-to-day driving.
