The S8 is produced at Audi's Neckarsulm 'aluminium plant', and it was introduced in September 1994. Like the A8, the S8 is only available as a four-door saloon/sedan, and both generations have been constructed from an all-aluminium monocoque, dubbed the "Audi Space Frame" (ASF), the S8 using the standard wheelbase platform, and is not available in the long-wheelbase of the A8L. The S8, like all Audi "S" models, is fitted as standard with Audi's trademark quattro four-wheel drive (4WD), with the S8 using the Torsen-based permanent 4WD system. At the same time of the A8's facelift in late 1999, the S8 received the same cosmetic upgrades. This was the first model to be introduced to the North American market. Production of this original S8 ended in September 2002, shortly before the introduction of the current D3-platform A8. The D2 S8 was also featured in the 1998 film Ronin. [edit] D2 powertrain Motive power in the D2 S8 powertrain featured a re-tuned, 250 kilowatts (340 PS; 335 bhp) version of the standard 4,172 cubic centimetres (254.6 cu in) 90° V8 petrol engine (parts code: 077, identification codes: AKH, AHC). From late 1999, the engine was given a further power increase to 265 kilowatts (360 PS; 355 bhp) at 7,000 rpm, and 430 newton metres (317 ft·lbf) of torque at 3,400 rpm (identification codes: AQH, AVP, AYS, BCS). A sports-recalibrated version of the ZF 5HP24 five-speed tiptronic automatic transmission (parts code: 01L, identification codes: DYM, ECX) (gear ratios - 1st: 3.571, 2nd: 2.200, 3rd: 1.505, 4th: 1.000, 5th: 0.804), featuring "Dynamic Shift Programme" (DSP) was standard. European-market models also had a six-speed manual transmission option (parts code: 01E, identification code: DGV). Torsen T-2 based quattro permanent four-wheel drive was also standard. [edit] D2 suspension, brakes, wheels & tyres A retuned, 20 millimetres (0.8 in) lowered sports suspension included a 30% stiffer spring rate and 40% more compression damping in the shock absorbers. Speed-sensitive "servotronic" power assisted steering was also standard. The brakes featured Bosch ABS 5.3 Anti-lock Braking System, with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and worked radially ventilated front discs of 345 millimetres (13.58 in) in diameter by 30 mm (1.18 in) thick. The rear vented discs measured 280 mm (11.02 in) by 22 mm (0.87 in). From 2002, an upgraded Bosch ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Programme became standard fitment. Standard alloy wheels were 8Jx18" cast aluminium alloy "Avus" 6-spoke style, with 245/45 ZR18 Dunlop SP Sport 8000 or Bridgestone Potenza RE040 performance tyres. From 1999 model year, an 8.5Jx20" polished "9-spoke RS" wheel became an option, shod with 255/35 ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. In 2003, 8Jx18" polished 9-spoke RS wheels became a no-cost option road wheel. Factory production commenced June 2006 and ended after 2009 along with the A8L W12, while the A8 4.2 and A8L 4.2 continued in production for the 2010 model year. Audi's factory performance claims for the V10 S8 indicate a 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (0 to 62.1 mph) time of 5.1 seconds whilst consuming "SuperPlus" / "EuroSuper" 98 RON unleaded petrol. This places the S8 in a competitive range with the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG (naturally-aspirated V8) and S600 (powered by a twin-turbo V12), and the BMW 760Li (powered by a naturally-aspirated 12-cylinder engine). The S8 is also comparable to Audi's own top-of-the-line A8L W12, though the W12 is more expensive, has more torque, and built on a longer wheelbase.[2] The S8's top speed is electronically limited to 250 kilometres per hour (155.3 mph). [edit] D3 powertrain Audi S8 (D3) 5.2 FSI V10 engine Motive power in the second-generation D3 S8 powertrain features a 5.2 litre all aluminium alloy 5,204 cubic centimetres (317.6 cu in) Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) 40-valve (four valves per cylinder) 90° V10 petrol engine (parts code: 07L, identification code: BSM). This engine is a derivative of the Gallardo's original 5.0 litre Lamborghini V10,[3] which was also developed under the Volkswagen Group ownership. On this Audi-only variant, compared to the Lamborghini engine, it features a longer stroke and wider bore - which increases the displacement of the engine, and produces more torque at lower revs, making it more suitable for the larger and heavier full-sized luxury Audi saloon. It produces 331 kilowatts (450 PS; 444 bhp) at 7,000 rpm, and 540 newton metres (398 ft·lbf) of torque at 3,500 rpm. It utilises twin chain-driven double overhead camshafts (DOHC), and variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves. Engine management is by way of Bosch DI-Motronic MED 9.1 electronic engine control unit, which controls the mapped direct ignition, ten individual spark coils, common rail cylinder-direct sequential multi-point fuel injection, and drive by wire throttle. The same 5.2 V10 engine is also used in the third-generation Audi S6 (C6), but in a slightly lower state of tune where it develops 320 kilowatts (435 PS; 429 bhp). A sports-optimised ZF 6HP26-A61 six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission (parts code: 09E, identification codes: KLW or KZK) (gear ratios - 1st: 4.171, 2nd: 2.340, 3rd: 1.521, 4th: 1.143, 5th: 0.867, 6th: 0.691) with "Dynamic Shift Programme" (DSP) and "sport" mode, with steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters, is the only offering. Output is transmitted via Audi's trademark quattro permanent four-wheel drive system, initially using the Torsen T-2 50:50 dynamic centre differential, and from 2008 model year, utilising the latest Torsen T-3 asymmetric dynamic centre differential, with a 'default' torque distribution of 40% to the front axle and 60% to the rear. Final drive ratio is 4.055, and traction is assisted with Audi's "Electronic Differential Lock" (EDL) and "Anti-Slip Regulation" (ASR) (commonly known as traction control system) - both functions of the Bosch ESP 5.7 (or the later ESP 8.0) Electronic Stability Programme. However, for the S8, the effective spring and damper rates are noticeably firmer, along with re-engineered suspension mounts. "servotronic" speed-dependent power assisted rack and pinion steering point the S8 in the desired trajectory. The brake system consists of radially ventilated discs all round, the fronts sized at 385 millimetres (15.2 in) in diameter by 36 mm (1.42 in) thick, and the rears at 335 mm (13.2 in) by 22 mm (0.87 in). The discs are clamped with gloss-black painted dual-piston calipers up front, and a single-piston sliding caliper at the rear, coupled to an electro-mechanical parking brake. A Bosch ESP 5.7 (later upgraded to ESP 8.0) Electronic Stability Programme, with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) complete the brake system. Optional "Audi ceramic" Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/SiC) composite front and rear brakes are available, which use 380 mm (14.96 in) diameter by 38 mm (1.496 in) thick drilled, radially vented, and floating SGL Carbon discs, with anthracite grey painted six-piston fixed Brembo monobloc alloy calipers with the "Audi ceramic" logo up front, and 356 mm (14.02 in) by 28 mm (1.102 in) discs at the rear. Standard alloy wheels consist of 9Jx20" cast aluminium alloy "S design", shod with either 265/35 ZR20 99Y XL performance tyres (either Bridgestone Potenza RE050A, or Yokohama Advan Sport), or 275/35 ZR20 102Y XL (Continental SportContact2, Dunlop SP SportMaxx, or Pirelli P-Zero Nero). A direct-acting tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is also standard. [edit] D3 body and interior Dashboard of the Audi S8 D3 The S8 includes subtle detailing to distinguish it from its related A8. The trapezoidal "single-frame" grille bears the characteristic Audi "S model" vertical strut detail which are highlighted in a chrome finish. "S8" badging is displayed front and rear, whilst "V10" badges are displayed on each front wing below the side-repeater indicators. The rear boot-lid incorporates a subtle rear spoiler, and the rear is finished with four chromed oval exhaust tailpipes. Adaptive Xenon-plus high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps include static turning lights, along with 'swiveling' dynamic cornering lights. Daytime running lamps are five light-emitting diodes (LEDs) incorporated into a cloverleaf designed reflector, incorporated into the main headlamp housing. The interior equipment includes two-colour leather-clad sports seats, a widescreen colour display for the Multi Media Interface (MMI), and white illuminated needles for the instrument dials. Other notable options include the "Advanced Parking" system, which includes a rearview camera, whose output is displayed on the colour MMI monitor, with "trajectory" lines which move in conjunction with steering wheel movements. The S8 is expected to use the 5.0 litre FSI biturbo V10 engine, which currently powers the Audi RS6 (C6) with 427 kilowatts (581 PS; 573 bhp). This means that the new S8 will push about 700-730 bhp if tuned by MTM or other chip-tuning companies.[4][5] But there a many references on the internet that it might use the V8 from the 2011 Audi RS5. Caught in our new spy photos, the 2011 Audi S8 was on test at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany. Word is that the S8 is powered by Audi's take on the Lamborghini-derived V10. Audi started using a V10 lump in the last-generation D3 A8 and the new A8 is equipped with new tech to lift those all-important Top Trumps bragging rights.So how powerful is the new 2011 Audi S8?CAR's sources suggest the newly fettled 5.0-litre V10 will follow the RS6 forced-induction recipe. Expect direct-injection and twin turbos to swell power to around 620bhp and torque to a stout 553lb ft, according to insiders. That's considerably up on the old S8's 444bhp and 398lb ft.Combined with the ASF aluminium spaceframe technology and more rear-biased Quattro four-wheel drive, it could make the S8 a worthy adversary to the Merc AMG models and BMW 760i.Are you sure this is the S8?The car snapped in our spy shots here is probably the new 2011 S8. It appears to be riding on the large 20- or 21-inch wheels, has engorged brake discs and quad exhaust pipes – while the Ingolstadt number plate is another giveaway this is a full Audi car and not a tuner special.Don't expect an RS8 version any time soon, however. Armoured or high protection vehicle maybe. In fact, only the time I didn't have fun was when the rear suspension sprang a leak resulting in the car looking like it had a boot full of gold bullion while doing 70 on the M20. By the time I got to the Blackwall tunnel, I was stopped and my telling kind officer that the boot doesn't open because some "bleep bleep" did a hit and run on me only serve to add tension to the situation. Brilliant example of the "fun per pound" equation working out nicely.....I had a 1976 BMW 1502 in Inca Orange with black Alpina alloys (original apparently). Also am sure I had a Hot Wheels/Corgi/Dinky bright orange thingy in the 1970s as a kid which may have started it all off. There is something about the subtle looks, understated power and excellent quality which makes them particularly compelling. The halo effect of the R8 supercar hasn’t hurt things either. So there are few cars which do more for your kudos than an Audi S8 fitted with the V10 engine from a Lamborghini Gallardo.
