Thanks to innovative dual-clutch technology, S tronic can make a gear change in just 0.2 of a second, with no interruption to the power flow, allowing you to benefit as fully as possible from the engine’s output at all times. Take a closer look at the technical specifications. More dynamism and less fuel Thanks to its continuously variable ratios and adaptive map control, multitronic provides seamless acceleration, and always uses the optimum engine speed for the circumstances. Because of this control near to the operating optimum, fuel consumption can in some cases actually be lower than with a manual gearbox. S tronic S tronic transmission The S tronic never takes a rest. While you’re accelerating in second gear the control logic is already pre-selecting third gear. At the gearshift point, the twin clutch reacts in a flash and the transmission shifts seamlessly. A two-shaft construction makes this changeover possible and ensures an uninterrupted flow of power to the drive wheels. S tronic (6-speed) The revolutionary S tronic gearbox combines the agility and responsiveness of a conventional 6-speed manual gearbox with the convenience and smooth, uninterrupted power of an automatic transmission. The technical basis of the S tronic gearbox is the double clutch. This consists of two lubricated plates with hydraulically-regulated contact pressure. One engages the odd-numbered gears, the other the even-numbered, enabling gear-shifts to be made in a fraction of a second, with no disruption to the power flow. Depending on how the mood takes you, you can either allow gear-changes to take place automatically or, for a sportier driving style, operate the S tronic system using the gear lever or steering wheel shift-paddles. The choice is yours. S tronic (7-speed) The extra gear, along with a dry-clutch set-up, results in improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. As with the 6-speed S tronic gearbox, this gear system can be operated in fully automatic mode, or using the gear lever or steering wheel gear-change controls for an even more engaging drive. tiptronic tiptronic transmission The 6-speed tiptronic transmission system is a form of automatic transmission available on Audi models with quattro permanent all-wheel-drive. The technology converts high-torque engine power into both sporty performance and operating convenience, with crisp, fast gear changes, reduced weight and an optimised gearshift strategy. More spontaneous gear changes are a particular benefit, especially when down-shifting. Both in the ‘D’ (Drive) and ‘S’ (Sport) programme, the advanced electronics used in tiptronic respond efficiently to every driver input, helping to prevent unwanted upshifts when cornering. R tronic R tronic sequential transmission R tronic is a unique technology developed by Audi, which provides swift and seamless gear-changing for an incredibly sporty drive. Thanks to its groundbreaking electro-hydraulic shifting unit, R tronic transmits all the force of the R8’s engine power to the road with unrivalled smoothness and control. And when you switch to S mode, the ride becomes all the more thrilling: the system delays automatic gearshifts for optimum acceleration, while the pioneering Launch Control provides the kind of lightning-fast performance that allows the R8 to spring from a standing start to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds*. * 5.2 FSI quattro. So it’s no surprise to learn that Vauxhall’s engineers used the German brand’s rapid S4 as a benchmark when developing the Insignia VXR.Launched earlier this year, the high-performance Audi debuted the company’s new supercharged 328bhp 3.0-litre V6 engine, which is more fuel efficient and cleaner than the V8 unit it replaces. Mated to the famous quattro all-wheel-drive transmission, it gives the S4 sports car-rivalling pace and agility. Not that you’d know that from the outside. If anything, the Audi’s styling is even more understated than the Insignia’s – the S4 could be mistaken for an ordinary A4. However, take a closer look and you’ll spot the LED headlamps, quad exhaust pipes, subtle side skirts and the silver finish on its door mirrors. The overall effect is restrained rather than racy. Inside, the Audi’s sporting credentials are equally low key. There’s a contoured three-spoke steering wheel, a pair of heavily bolstered front seats and a smattering of S4 logos. The rest of the cabin is carried over from the standard car, which means it is beautifully built from top-quality materials.Up front, drivers will have no problem getting comfortable, thanks to a wide range of seat and steering column adjustments, while occupants in the rear are treated to more headroom than in the Vauxhall.Open the bootlid, and you’ll find a useful 480 litres of carrying capacity – although that’s 20 litres down on the VXR.At the test track, the Audi has the upper hand, courtesy of its supercharged engine. It produces 90 per cent of its maximum torque from only 2,200rpm. Combine this with the superb traction from its quattro drivetrain, and the Audi is seriously fast off the line. It sprinted from 0-60mph in only five seconds, but it’s the car’s in-gear punch that really impresses – the S4 delivers blistering overtaking pace. Direct steering, rapid gearshifts from the seven-speed twin-clutch S tronic transmission, and strong all-weather grip ensure the S4 inspires real confidence. Our car’s agility was further enhanced by Audi’s optional Drive Select system, which offers Comfort, Normal and Sport settings for the steering and dampers. It was also fitted with a hi-tech Sports rear differential, which helps to eliminate understeer.Although effective, this extra kit adds £1,750 to the Audi’s already hefty £35,680 price tag. Fit a few more options, such as sat-nav, full leather trim and metallic paint, and the price will rise to nearly £50,000.The S4 boasts ferocious pace, a capable chassis and a desirable image, but does it do enough to justify its price premium?
