[ 1 ] Collaboratively designed as a joint venture between Audi AG and Porsche , and built on Audi's 80 Avant , it was Audi's first " RS " vehicle, [ 2 ] and the first of their high performance Avants (Audi's name for an estate car or station wagon); it used the most powerful and most thoroughly developed version of Audi's inline-five cylinder turbocharged internal combustion engine . Although it was not widely exported outside of Europe , except for a few to Hong Kong , South Africa , Brazil and New Zealand , the RS2 has amassed an impressive cult following worldwide, and it is often regarded as being the vehicle that finally firmly established Audi as a producer of practical high performance vehicles: its estate body, seating for five persons, and Audi's 'trademark' quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system as standard made it usable as a comfortable daily driver, even in poor weather conditions. The " RS " initials stand for R enn S port (from German , literally translated as "racing sport"), and is Audi's highest performance 'top-tier' trim level, positioned distinctly above the " S " ("Sport") specification level of Audi's regular model range. RS cars are usually produced in limited numbers over a limited time scale , and pioneer some of Audi's latest and most advanced technology and engineering prowess, therefore, "RS" cars could be described as halo vehicles . Whilst RS cars generally command a much higher purchase price, compared to their 'lesser' brethren, they also retain very high residual values too. Contents 1 Overview 2 See also 3 References 4 External links [ edit ] Overview The RS2 was the product of a co-development project between Audi and Porsche , based on Audi's 80 Avant, and built on the Volkswagen Group B4 platform . It was powered by a modified version of their 2.2  litre inline five-cylinder 20 valve turbocharged petrol engine (parts code prefix: 034, identification code: ADU). [ 1 ] This internal combustion engine produced a motive power output of 232 kilowatts (315  PS ; 311  bhp ) at 6,500  revolutions per minute (rpm). Although much of the car's underpinnings were manufactured by Audi, assembly was handled by Porsche at their Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen , Germany , which had become available after discontinuation of the Mercedes-Benz 500E , which Porsche had manufactured there under contract. The Rossle-Bau plant also produced the famous Porsche 959 . Audi RS2 Avant Like the rest of the vehicle, the RS2's five-cylinder engine was based on a unit that Audi already produced, although Porsche considerably modified the engine; the standard KKK turbocharger was switched for a larger unit, along with a heavy-duty intercooler and higher flow fuel injectors , a newly designed camshaft , a more efficient induction system, and a low-pressure exhaust system replaced the standard fare; a new Bosch -supplied engine management system (ECU) controlled the engine. With so much power available, the RS2 could accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (62.1  mph ) in 4.8  seconds , and achieve a maximum speed of 262 km/h (162.8 mph) (electronically restricted), despite weighing over 1,600 kilograms (3,527  lb ). In a road test conducted in 1995, British car magazine Autocar timed the RS2 from 0 to 30 mph (48 km/h) at just 1.5 seconds, which they confirmed was faster than both the McLaren F1 road car, and also Jacques Villeneuve 's Formula One car of that time. Even by more modern standards, its performance is exceptional; it could accelerate on-par with the C5 generation Chevrolet Corvette , and was only a tenth of a second slower to 60 than a 996 generation Porsche 911 . Audi RS2 Avant A six-speed manual gearbox (parts code prefix: 01E, identification code: CRB) ( gear ratios - 1st: 3.500, 2nd: 1.889, 3rd: 1.320, 4th: 1.034, 5th: 0.857, 6th: 0.711) [ 1 ] was the only transmission choices. Audi's Torsen -based [ 1 ] 'trademark' quattro permanent four-wheel drive system was standard. Front and rear final drive units contained a conventional 'open' differential , and have a ratio of 4.111, although the rear (parts code prefix: 01H, identification code: AZE) also has an electro-mechanical diff lock. [ 1 ] Porsche-designed braking and suspension systems replaced the standard Audi 80 equipment, however, the Bosch Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) was retained. The front brakes [ 1 ] feature either 304 millimetres (11.97  in ) in diameter by 32 mm (1.260 in) thick radially vented brake discs , and use Brembo four-opposed piston fixed calipers, or a 'modified' option of larger discs (which will only fit under a 17" wheel) of 322 mm (12.68 in) by 32 mm (1.260 in), with uprated brake pads. The rears [ 1 ] featured 299 mm (11.77 in) by 24 mm (0.945 in) radially vented discs, again with Brembo four-piston calipers, and the 'modified' option included identical sized discs, but merely included cross-drilling, along with uprated pads. The handbrake [ 1 ] worked on the rears, and consisted of a cable operated 'drum in disc' system. 40 millimetres (1.6  in ) lower than a standard 80 Avant, the suspension and braking upgrades combined to give the RS2 the handling and braking capabilities of a high-end sports car; 7.0Jx17  inch Porsche 'Cup' roadwheels , [ 1 ] and high performance 245/40 ZR17 Dunlop tyres were standard as well. In fact, the braking system wore Porsche-badged Brembo calipers, and both the wheels and side mirrors were identical in design to those of the 964 Turbo . Additionally, the word "PORSCHE" is inscribed in the RS2 emblem affixed to the rear tailgate and front grille . A three-spoke leather steering wheel , Recaro sports-bucket seats (available in full leather or a leather/ suede combination), and console materials in either wood or carbon fibre trim rounded out the vehicle's interior changes. Audi's proprietary Safety Restraint System, procon-ten remained from its donor vehicle. [ 1 ] Approximately 2200 RS2s were to be built initially, but due to demand the total was 2891 cars built. Of these, only 180 were right hand drive cars built for the UK, New Zealand and South African markets. Audi also produced an S2 , which was available both as a Avant (estate) and a Coupé , as well as saloon model with only 306 models built. It featured a similar turbocharged 2.2 litre five-cylinder engine which delivered 162 kW (220 PS; 217 bhp) (3B engine), or 169 kW (230 PS; 227 bhp) (ABY engine). Ollie Stallwood drives the Audi RS2... ‘Faster than the McLaren F1’. That’ll be the 240mph, Gordon Murray-designed, V12 supercar, McLaren F1 then? So what, in the mid-nineties, dared to step forward and give this legendary automobile a cheeky slap round the face? An Audi 80, that’s what. OK, so the reality was that when Autocar tested the freakish RS2’s 0-30mph time and found that in fact 1.5 seconds was faster than the F1, it was mostly down to the Teutonic car’s all-wheel drive, but it did give an insight into exactly what we were dealing with. I mean, it was an estate for crying out loud – exactly how fast do you need to get to the gymkhana? Little did we know that not only had Audi created a beast in a rather old-fashioned suit, but it had reinvented itself as the creator of seriously fast (usually load-lugging) executive cars. The RS badge was new and what it meant was that Audi had completely lost it, but in a good way. Frankly, the 80 had been around for too long already, but this was to start a trend of pushing the boundaries of what is capable by way of a run-out model. It was nothing less than a Frankenstein’s monster, but was destined to be an instant classic. Look at Audi’s RS models now and you’ll see a cohesive blend of visual performance features and improved components that work in harmony with each other. The RS2 looked like the creation of the A-Team when they were locked in a barn with a written-off Porsche 993, an Audi 80 and a welding kit. But that’s why it looks so good. There is something so right about the way Porsche parts have been bolted on – the 993 wing mirrors, the 993 Turbo’s brakes, the Porsche indicators, the rear reflector panel that apes a 911 – to create a mind-boggling hybrid of two manufacturers. The car was a direct collaboration between Porsche and Audi, but was assembled at the Stuttgart carmaker’s plant in Zuffenhausen. It may seem the norm now to have outrageously overpowered estates and saloons these days, but this uber-wagon was to make Audi’s name in this brave new world. Power was provided by a heavily reworked version of Audi’s 2.2-litre five-cylinder unit, as found in the Quattro coupe turbo. Porsche fitted a larger KKK24 turbocharger (boosting at 1.4 bar), along with a heavy-duty intercooler, improved induction system and exhaust, a redesigned camshaft and a new engine management system. This 80 now had 315bhp and 302lb ft of torque, which were big figures in those days, and pushed the car to 60mph in a barely believable 4.8 seconds, almost on par with a Porsche 993. Bespoke tyres were made for those Porsche Cup alloys (which have a slightly different diameter hole in the middle), the suspension was tweaked, dropping the car 41mm lower, and top notch Recaros were bolted into the cabin. The result – nothing quite like anyone had seen before. The RS2 set about smashing everyone’s preconceptions about performance, estates, Audi, life in general, and duly took the world by storm. Only available in Europe, it was known across the world, a masterplan of this German carmaker’s ambitions. All this was 14 years ago now and while most 80 Avants languish in the bargain pages of Autotrader, good RS2s command £20,000 and above – hardly surprising though, considering they were almost £50,000 new. The RS2 is a fascinating car and I couldn’t wait to find out how much of the legend is true. It is the mark of a very special car that gets people talking when it appears in the car park underneath PH Towers. The RS2 did exactly that, creating a chatter through the office and drawing people from their PCs to the window. This particular example is in mint condition and owned by Jeremy Copp. And if you think owning an RS2 is lucky, try owning one to use as a tow car to drag around a Caterham. Jeremy says it works great as a workhorse, and is a perfect fill-in when he can’t get his hands on his 996 GT3. I’m jealous. The RS2 looks every bit as good as it did when I sat in one at the British Motor Show almost half my life ago, and getting the chance to drive one seems like a real privilege. It just looks so cool – this is my kind of car and I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed. We head out of the urban sprawl and find some back roads to see how quick this Audi 80 really is. It’s time for my go and as I get myself comfortable with electric seat adjustment, I’m a little nervous that the RS2 will be impossibly overstretched and unruly. I’m wrong; the RS2 couldn’t be easier to drive. The five-pot growls away in that fabulously off-tune way and while the gearbox is light and initially feels a little vague, each gear snicks in accurately and with no fuss. The steering is light, perhaps a little too much, but again, under the surface there is a reassuring directness. The car rides reasonably well for what it is too, and while we chat I almost forget why I am here, content with just feeding the RS2 through villages the same way I would any other estate. But there is a reason for much of this docility, and that is known as turbo lag. What happens when you do plant your foot down is frightening, and for more than one reason. Try overtaking in third and you are faced with that why-the-hell-aren’t-I-moving kind of millisecond that seems to happen at the wrong moment - i.e. on the wrong side of the road. This is followed by such a sudden and overwhelming swell of power that spits you down the road so quickly your mind is still in the why-aren’t-I-moving moment. The acceleration is savage and unrelenting. The RS2 goes from a heavy car that seems uninterested in moving its own mass, to an unstoppable steam train. It’s fantastic. The problem is keeping the turbo on the boil to make the car flow through a serious of bends, without having the kind of on/off power that will leave RS2 pieces decorating hedges. Jeremy suggests sticking the car in second if you are going to overtake, or if you want to start making progress, thus firing up the turbo and then keeping it on song for as long as you dare. It works, and before long I’m holding on for dear life as the RS2 devours large chunks of tarmac. It’s quite softly sprung, which can be a little disconcerting given its mass, but after a while this works in its favour. The car soaks up bumps and is more forgiving when you carry too much speed into a bend, which normally results in understeer. But pile in some power at the apex (preferably over about 3,500 revs) and the power seems to get directed rearward, tightening your line considerably, and balancing the car. To me it is an absorbing experience because at first you drive it like a modern, high-powered four-wheel drive, throwing it into bends and letting the chassis sort the rest out. This won’t do in the RS2, the driver has to be involved and take responsibility in a very old school way. Grip is phenomenal and the car will cover ground at an astonishing rate, but the driver is always at the helm. The brakes are fantastic, as you would expect, but for all the progressive race car feel, you can almost forget they need a decent shove when you are crawling through town. The RS2 is a unique experience. Not as polished as today’s super-fast German estates, and almost a crude test bed for the concept, but it works exceptionally well. Tow cars don’t get much better than this.   Author: Oli S 136 comments on this story Latest comment by CraigW Term & Conditions Hosted by Carrenza Copyright © 1998-2010 PistonHeads.com ® Speed Matters ® || Model Reviews Troubleshooting Latest News Photo Gallery Buying / Selling Tips Clubs & Associations Books & Videos Photo Gallery > RS2 RS blue and Volcano black together RS blue and Volcano black together RS blue and Volcano black together Engine Brakes Finished in Lazer Red Email your Audi pictures to photo-gallery@audilinks.co.uk © UK WEB SITES .NET Advertising Terms of Use Feedback || Home About us Links Legal Privacy Home Specifications Latest additions Latest images Your stable Search specs Follow Carfolio.com Carfolio.com group Vehicle Search Enter the Carfolio.com ID to go directly to that model.
