S line trim has sports suspension and body kit, and bigger alloys. Against Okay, so it's not as sharp to drive as a BMW 5-series and the firm S-line suspension won't be to all tastes, but other than that, what's not to like? Our favourite model has a 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI engine that gives very respectable performance, but still averages the best part of 50mpg. It's not the cheapest model, but we think it's worth paying for. On the other hand, anyone who's buying with company money may well be attracted by the 2.0-litre TDIe models, which have emissions of just 139g/km and a consequently low tax liability. The petrol engines, meanwhile, are still pretty strong and will suit drivers with lower annual mileages - they aren't as frugal as the diesels and don't have such strong residuals, but they are much cheaper to buy. Whatever model you buy, you'll be getting one of the biggest cars in the executive class, backed up with superb build quality, plenty of equipment (for us, SE is the best balance of cost and kit) and a maximum five-star crash-test rating from Euro NCAP.
