It is the first step on the premium ladder that is the most fiercely fought, with all sorts of pretenders and wannabes attempting to unseat the current favourites, of which the Audi A4 is one of the most sought-after. Long time rival of the BMW 3-Series, the A4 has provided a subtle contrast to BMW’s sometimes controversial styling, and has since won many fans. As diesel is also the flavour of the month, the prospect of a 168bhp version of the 2-litre TDI engine slotted into the A4 saloon should make it just about the perfect saloon. The engine has already appeared in some sister Volkswagen products, but in the A4 it is even better placed. However, the pro to that con is that residual values are among the strongest in the class, especially on the smaller-engined diesel models. Audi is rightly renowned for its diesel models, and these are certainly the best engines in the range. However, do your sums carefully before buying one, as you’ll need to do a high annual mileage to recoup their higher (than the equivalent petrol models’) list prices through the lower fuel bills. Similarly, we don’t think it’s worth paying for the most expensive models, unless you need their four-wheel drive, as they have the least impressive fuel economy and the lowest residuals. On the other hand, if applicable, it’s worth avoiding the (unbadged) base trim. SE is only a little dearer, and much more attractive in the used market. Posted at 2010-08-15 18:38:32 Writing about the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric given 97% (235-40-18-W) Driving on mostly motorways for 100 spirited miles These tyres came into their own the other night when on the motorway at 4am it suddenly started to absolutely hammer it down with rain at 100 mph + these were as sure footed as ever and so stable gave me so much confidence. But then the down pour got so bad I had to slow down to about 60 mph as the car started to aquaplane as the motorway was soaked and it was difficult to see due to so much hard falling rain. Eventually the rain tailed off and I got onto a decent stretch of country road and again I put these tyres to the test and they were superb complete confidence in high speed cornering and very progressive up to the limit. I have read lots of reviews of the wet capability of this tyre and have now had first hand experience was extremely satisfied with the performance excellent tyre form Goodyear. They are very comfortable and offer a nice firm ride but not too hard. In the dry they have handled as well as any other top premium tyre I have tried but in the wet they have been the best tyre I have had. Grip the road superbly and give you confidence to push the car further whilst still offering excellent grip. Superb value for money too. So far performance in wet and dry are still superb and im anticipating at least 20k out of these. Excellent value for money. I could smell the burnt rubber and knew the tyre would be shot. Had the tyre looked at today and the it was shredded on the inside. Until then they had covered 10k and were down to 7mm (8mm when new) so very impressed. Dont think I wanna pay ?170 for a new PS2 tyre so went for 2 new Eagle F1A's for the rears and will keep the good rear PS2 as a spare. These Continentals are a soft rubber compound, so whilst give excellent grip and feedback, they didn't last long at all - the front pair has done 9,000 miles over a year and now need replacing. The rears still have significant life left. In summary a great performing tyre, but avoid unless you want your tyre fitter to become your best friend!
