This A3 S line looks like a hot hatch – but with Audi’s latest 1.6-litre diesel and stop-start, it’s cheap to run. For the first time, we’ve tried the eco-friendly motor with the super-efficient seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch box. How does it stand up?Compared to the manual, there’s no performance penalty – 0-62mph takes only three-tenths longer, at 11.7 seconds, while the 121mph top speed is the same. On the move, the auto works well, changing gears swiftly, while the torquey engine offers great refinement and punch. For extra pace, there’s a Sport mode, which holds on to gears longer before changing up. Plus, steering wheel paddles add to the appeal.Factor in combined economy of 67.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 109g/km, and this Audi looks like a tempting choice. However, the auto doesn’t combine that well with stop-start. Once you’ve come to a halt, there can be too much of a delay between you demanding power and the engine firing up.S line trim brings seven-spoke alloys, a roof spoiler and leather seats, giving the already smart-looking A3 extra visual appeal. But there’s a price to pay for standing out. When you specify the £1,450 S tronic transmission, this car costs nearly £23,000. Unless you really need an automatic gearbox or can’t live without the head-turning looks of the S line trim, we’d save £4,200 and plump for the five-speed manual SE. It’s good to drive, still looks desirable, has plenty of standard equipment and, crucially, costs even less to run. It’s a winner. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a natural close resemblance to its contemporary, the Volkswagen Golf Mk4. The car was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, in order to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front- and four-wheel drive. All engines were an inline four-cylinder configuration, and were transversely mounted. After the A4, the Audi A3 was the second model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. In 1999, Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 Turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with Unit Injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (130 kW; 180 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based on-demand four-wheel drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. 1999 was also the year Audi was forced to bow to market demands and introduced a hastily-conceived five-door body that the company had not previously intended to produce.[citation needed] In late 2000, the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear light clusters, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the brand new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI. Audi's Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), traction-control and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries. Originally launched only as a three-door hatchback with four cylinder engines, it featured a new automobile platform (the PQ35 platform), a redesigned and more spacious interior, new petrol engines with Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), and standard six-speed manual gearboxes (except on the base 1.6). In mid 2003, the line was updated with two sports-orientated models, a 2.0 Turbo-FSI version rated 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp), and a 3.2 VR6 engine (for the first time) with 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). Haldex Traction-based quattro on-demand four wheel drive, and the S-Tronic semi-auto gearbox were introduced as options (quattro is standard on the VR6) on every model with engine over 140 PS (103 kW; 138 hp). The A3 Sportback is 80 mm (3 in) longer than the base three-door body, and includes improved rear cabin space and a larger luggage compartment (370 litres). It also received the new "single frame" front grille originally introduced in the A8 W12, which was later adopted across the whole A3 range. These include revised nose and tail styling, with a modified grille and the new "trademark" daytime running lights, common rail 2.0 TDI engines, 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission availability for the smaller non-U.S. engines, and optional "magnetic ride" adaptive shock absorbers. The 2.0 TFSI engine was rated 265 PS (195 kW; 261 hp), and is available with standard quattro and a 6-speed manual transmission. It is to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds. The springs and dampers were tuned for a harder setting, and ride height lowered by 25 mm (1 in). 225/40 ZR18 tyres are standard. Powered by a 5-cylinder, 2.5-litre 340 PS (250 kW; 335 hp) engine and equipped with 7-speed S tronic transmission and quattro four-wheel drive, acceleration is quoted as 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. The RS3 features a wider track, flared wheelarches, sill panels, and distinctive front and rear styling. First deliveries are expected in early 2011.[3] [edit] Audi A3 2.0 TDI clean diesel (2010-) The A3 2.0 TDI clean diesel is a version of Audi's A3 2.0 TDI for the North American market, making it the second Audi TDI vehicle sold in North America, following the Audi Q7 TDI in 2008. It is a FWD vehicle with S-tronic transmission with Hill-hold assist, Sirius satellite radio, Leather seats and steering wheel, Auxiliary audio input, Dual-zone climate control, 17 in (431.8 mm) alloy wheels. The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 North American International Auto Show. In January 2007, the normally aspirated (non-turbo) 2.0 FSI was replaced by a new turbocharged 1.8 TFSI engine rated 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp). It is available in front-wheel drive only. In late 2007, Audi introduced a new 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) 1.4L TFSI engine for the A3, replacing the 1.6 FSI engine, and a new diesel "e"-model. The "e"-model, Audi's equivalent of Volkswagen's BlueMotion, is available with the 1.9L TDI engine, and offers a more ecological car, with a CO2 emission below 120 g/km. In June 2009, Audi announced the release of two models of A3 1.6 TDI for European market. The first uses Audi's start/stop and energy recovery system, and will produce 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp). This engine will achieve approximately 4.1 L/100 km (69 mpg-imp; 57 mpg-US).[clarification needed] The second engine does not use the same efficiency systems and will produce 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) will get 4.5 L/100 km (63 mpg-imp; 52 mpg-US). They went on sale in June 2009.[8] In August 2009, Audi announced that the 1.6 8-valve petrol engine would be replaced by a turbocharged 1.2 TFSI engine already found in VW's Polo and Golf models. This engine is rated at 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) and 175 N·m (129 lb·ft), emitting 127 g/km of CO2.[9] As of April 2010, Audi has yet to release official specifications or prices for the 1.2 TSI model, as the 1.6 model has been made a special clearance model for clearing out 1.6 stock.[citation needed] [edit] Marketing In the Spring of 2005, Audi began a massive alternate reality game to advertise for the A3, known as The Art of the Heist. Andy Enright ReportsSome ideas are so good you have to wonder why they never appeared sooner. Audi already make a Range of diesel engines that use pump jet direct diesel injection. Its nothing particularly new, just a technology that the company have finessed over the years and which has now matured in tandem with other high tech solutions. Some of their more expensive cars also use Piezo injection technology. Combining the two systems has resulted in a diesel engine that offers a serious amount of shove and when plumbed into the pretty A3, results in an extremely covetable package indeed.As the shampoo ads proclaim, heres the science bit. Direct injection is, basically, a system intended to make better use of every drop of diesel. The injectors on all four cylinders are controlled by a single powerful electronic control unit (ECU) which carefully controls the amount and mixture of fuel passing through into each cylinder. For engineers, the obvious next step is for each cylinder to have its own ECU unit; the fuel amount and mixture can then be even more carefully monitored and even greater efficiency achieved. This is the basic concept behind the new 'second generation' of 'common rail' diesels engines that Volkswagen says it's developing in its own time. The big bonus of Volkswagens TDI system is that its relatively easy to liberate big power outputs. So what do the Piezo injectors do? In short, they precisely meter fuel delivery to provide more power and even stronger performance. Featuring a high-pressure pump and rail for the four cylinder engine, the Piezo system permits up to five separate amounts of fuel to be injected on each working stroke at an injection pressure of 1,600 bar - 250 bar more than with previous common rail systems. This helps to achieve the best possible fuel/air mixture and an even more efficient combustion process. Environmental impact is also minimised by a diesel particulate filter, which is fitted as standard and works in conjunction with the twin catalytic converters to maximise exhaust gas cleansing. The system needs no additives, and so will need no servicing throughout the lifespan of the car."The 170bhp TDI engine and the A3 make a very beguiling combination"This may all be a little too Open University for some but the net result is a car that anybody can enjoy, just as long as they can stump up at least £19,165. With 170bhp under the bonnet, it certainly doesnt hang around. The headline figure with this model isnt the power output but the maximum torque output of 258lb/ft. The BMW 330i, the Ford Focus ST, the Mercedes SL350, the Porsche Cayman S, and the Subaru Impreza WRX all fail to top this figure. Torque is simply defined as rotational force and its best to think of it as the engines muscularity. With this sort of torque on tap, you can rest assured that this Audi isnt going to get sand kicked in its face. Acceleration figures from rest never do a diesel car justice and the 0-60 figure of 7.9 seconds sounds brisk rather than concussive. A more indicative test is the 30-70mph time through the gears and here the A3 is quick enough to give many of the cars listed above a real scare. With a top speed of 137mph, the A3 TDI 170 will have no issues about cruising at British motorway speeds and even on the cut and thrust of a two lane derestricted autobahn it has more than enough mumbo to jet up to speed after dispatching a dawdling artic. The great thing about this powerplant is that the torque is almost omnipresent. That maximum figure is available from just 1,750rpm, little more than tickover. Running costs are kept on the manageable side with a fuel economy figure of 48.7mpg while a 157g/km emissions figure will mean this car will figure on the wanted lists of many business users with a £20k budget. The 750-mile effective Range is also very attractive to those who want to get from A to B without having to stop off to pump fuel. The quattro models harness all that torque superbly, rarely troubling the traction control system even on the greasiest surfaces. Opt for one of these all-wheel drive variants and the price starts at £22,355. Trim levels run from entry level through SE, Sport and plush S line versions and theres also the option of the five-door Sportback variant. Quattro versions are only offered with the Sport and S line designations. Bulletproof build quality, intricate detailing and a prestigious badge once only came with a stratospheric price ticket. These days, such highway snobbery is arriving in smaller and smaller packages and the latest Audi A3 line-up makes downsizing look positively attractive. As well as a meaner look, this second generation version boasts a larger body, a clever rear suspension system, smart electromechanical power steering and a revolutionary S Tronic semi-automatic gearbox that comes as an option on the 2.0 TDI model featured here. Audi have once again produced a cabin which, despite the all-pervading blackness of the trim (do the Germans recognise any other interior colour?) feels less of a coal hole than in the past. And this despite the fact that you sit lower in the car (necessary to preserve headroom since the sleeker roofline is also lower). A few simple ergonomic tweaks help in the overall feeling of space and well-being. The steering wheel height adjustment Range has been increased by 20% and the reach by 5%. Moreover, the gear lever and accelerator pedal have been repositioned and theres a clever Z-shaped shortened handbrake, which frees up space on the centre console for two additional cupholders that are also accessible to those at the rear. Best of all, the cabin is built to even higher standards than before. Nothing you can buy in this sector feels as solid. We particularly liked the aluminium-fringed round air vents, the rotary ventilation knobs and the struts between the transmission tunnel and centre console, all of which are reminiscent of the Audi TT sportscar. The Audi A3 TDI 170 is a car that makes a lot of sense. While it may not stack up in pure financial terms, drive it and see why its set for success. This is a diesel car youll prefer to a petrol and be willing to pay a premium for.
