Audi's A3 has been around for quite some time, too, and it has been given a variety of flavours ranging from the entry-level 1.6-litre petrol to a high-performance turbodiesel. While a sports hatch with an oil-burning unit under the bonnet may seem unappealing, Audi is at the forefront of the technology in this burgeoning sector. And now the addition of the marque's famed quattro 4WD system has opened up a whole new ballgame for performance diesels. The latest engine is the range-topping 130bhp 1.9-litre direct-injection TDI, shared with VW and SEAT. This offers a massive 310Nm of torque from as low as 1,900rpm. Performance is commendable, being fed through a six-speed manual gearbox which is swift and direct to use. However, the overall combination here produces a harsher tone and feels less responsive from low revs than its front-wheel-drive twin, mainly because of the added weight of the quattro system. Against the clock, however, the extra traction helps propel the TDI from 0-60mph in a marginally quicker 9.1 seconds, although the top speed takes a slight dip to 126mph. The quattro diesel is most effective on slippy or icy roads, though, where it proves even more useful than in the petrol A3 4x4. With the oil-burner's peaky power delivery, using all of the engine's torque can make front-driven cars scrabble for grip - but this model finds traction instantly and without drama. The A3 has always been involving to drive, and the stiffened suspension and chunkier alloys of the Sport trim firm up the ride without spoiling comfort. While the steering is not pin-sharp, it is nicely weighted and offers enough feedback to match the quattro-enhanced grip. Traditionally, high-performance hatches have been blighted by excessive fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. But the advent of sportier, more refined diesels means drivers can have performance without paying at the pumps. The figures aren't as impressive as for the two-wheel-drive version, but the quattro's economy still ranks at a wallet-friendly 47.1mpg, with a CO2 emission read-out of 162g/km, well below the minimum tax bracket for company cars. While this will endear the quattro to the sporty but frugal driver, its pricing may be less appealing. With the Sport pack the asking price is ί¿½19,395, which includes leather trim. However, our test car's optional sat-nav, xenon headlights, six-CD changer and BOSE sound system raised the cost to ί¿½25,432. That's more than the full-blown, 225bhp S3 quattro - but, as with ice cream, it's a matter of taste. Diesel performance has improved to the point where sporty oil-burners are no longer a laughing matter. Although the A3 hatchback is hardly in the first flush of youth, the latest version combines the sure-footedness of Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system with a strong 130bhp TDI motor and the tweaked handling of the Sport suspension. Fun, frugal but perhaps a little too fancy for some. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £16,545 - £26,455 For : Top-notch cabin, understated styling, some excellent engines Against : Could be sportier to drive DrivingThe Audi is a relaxed cruiser, with a good ride, well-controlled damping and plenty of suspension travel. Only really nasty surfaces send shocks into the cabin. Body control and front-end grip are good too, although the handling does lack ultimate dynamic appeal, with slower steering and more body movement than racier competitors. However, it’s easy to drive, composed and well mannered. Engines are generally good too, with an effective, if noisy, range of TDI diesels. The 1.6-litre FSI was replaced in early 2008 with an impressive 1.4 TFSI, and the small turbocharged unit punches well above its weight, as do larger 1.8-litre TFSI and 2.0-litre TFSI powerplants. There is also a 3.2-litre V6. MarketplaceIt’s the baby of the Audi range, but the A3 runs the A4 close as the firm's best selling model. It comes as a three-door and a five-door Sportback, which we’ve tested separately. The three-door is a handsome and well-conceived car. The overall sense of solidity is a trait of the brand, and is apparent on even the entry-level A3. Many variants can be coupled with quattro four-wheel-drive running gear, while the effective DSG dual-clutch gearbox is also available on several versions. Competitors include the BMW 1-Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Alfa Romeo 147 and the car Audi based the A3 on, Volkswagen’s Golf. OwningThe A3’s quality ambience continues inside, and there’s little to fault in the cabin. The finish and detailing are as good as in other Audis, and despite the simplicity of the dash design, there’s a real premium feel to the car. The tactile rotary air vents and metal handles all add an extra edge, while the driving position is spot-on – both seat and steering wheel have a wide range of adjustment. It’s generally quite spacious, too, with ample legroom in the rear and a 350-litre boot boasting a long load length. Only tight access past the comfortable front chairs gives cause for complaint. There are no concerns with fuel economy, either; diesels are excellent and petrol models are good on fuel, too. But the A3’s financial trump card is its retained values. On many models, they’re close to 50 per cent, which really is an exceptional result for the company. Report this review Great car. Performance is great and it is good on long journeys. It is a very comfortable car to drive, I would definitely look to get an Audi for my next car as well. I get the impression that the engine will go on and on without a problem. The only downside is that I prefer the look of the new Audi's, I should be looking to get a new one though sometime in the future. Great car. Report this review I have 2002 Audi A3 1.9 tdi quattro sport and has been modified and rolling road tested with 245bhp and 390 lb/ft torque.the clutch has been replaced with a full performance kit and flywheel.the turbo has been tweaked little,and has had a remap and uprated intercooler.it's in gear acceleratio times are very very quick as the owner of an AudiR8 found out the other day!!!.from the lights it will beat pretty much anything or will at the very least keep up.due to the short gearing and low rev nature ... The engine ...tdi 2.0 is very responsive.This is a proven chassis latest version is only a facelift ,some of the smaller engined models are underpowered (non quatro).The quatro version with 2.0 tdi 170hp(125kw) is up to the job.In all its a drivers car,other car makers could learn from this.
