Audi promises this diesel A3 is cleaner and quieter than the car it replaces while still offering a sporty drive within premium quality surroundings. This Audi A3 diesel doesn’t look that much different does it? Not visually, no: it’s a minor nip and tuck job that only the committed Audi fan will spot – re-crafted bumpers, headlamps, tail lamps - unless you’re looking at a car fitted with the new optional daytime LED running lights, of course. Doesn’t sound like they’ve done much then? Well there are quite a few detail changes across the range – flatter underfloors, improved aerodynamics, tweaks to the interior trim - and the A3 range has recently become rather complicated on the engine front. There’s a 1.4-litre petrol engine that makes more power than the 1.6-litre – thanks to a turbocharger – leaving the latter as the entry level - and rather dated - motor. Then there’s a new 1.8-litre turbo engine in the range that sounds to the ear like the 2.0-litre TFSI but is in fact an all-new unit first seen in the recently launched A4. Actually, the acclaimed 2.0 TFSI won’t be around for much longer either: it’s due to be replaced soon by another 2.0 TFSI unit based on the new 1.8-litre block. The 3.2 narrow-angle V6 has been dropped in the UK, but not elsewhere, where it continues in S-Tronic Quattro form only. On the diesel side, the ubiquitous 1.9 TDI is still rattling away at the foot of the range but can also be had in greener ‘e’ trim, and then there’s a couple of 2.0-litre TDI motors with 138bhp and 168bhp. Except don’t be fooled by these numbers, because they aren’t the usual A3 pump-düse injection engines, but the revised common rail injection units first seen in the new A4. Got all that? And there’s now a seven-speed dual clutch S-Tronic ‘box available on smaller engines, as well as the usual six-speed S-Tronic ‘box on the bigger engines. Well I can safely say that it's just not quite large enough to be practical for two adults and one small child plus accompanying kit, the 4wd is VERY part time, i.e. you have to be sliding on ice to get it to work, it's unspeakably dull to drive despite the engine and yesterday the drivers door handle fell off when I went to open the door. Add these to the facts that about a week after its three year anniversary the passenger seat occupancy sensor failed so it pings a constant warning noise at you if you don't do up the seat belt even when nobody's in the seat and an unidentifiable squeak developed somewhere in the cabin and you have a pretty disappointed consumer. The original A3 was largely responsible for the premium hatch market but the current version doesn't seem to offer very much over competitors and whilst the revisions sound vaguely interesting on paper I can guarantee that this refreshed car is still going to be dull. I'm in the market for to replace the A3 at present and looked briefly at the new A4 Avant but it too is so dull that I just couldn't bring myself to buy one. Andy Enright reportsExpectation can be a cruel thing. While as a journalist I often receive those heart warming moments of exceeded expectation from budget cars, its not often that a product from a premium manufacturer really gives you that rosy glow. After all, we expect nothing less than perfection when it comes to a car maker like Audi. We dont tolerate the flaws wed call character from supposedly lesser companies. Whats more, were becoming more demanding and Audi have to respond with ever more surreally competent products. Products like the latest 170bhp A4 2.0-litre TDI diesel. Yes, we could say that some competitors offer a little more in the way of rear legroom, others have more competitively priced options and some handle with a little more verve but for most of its target clientele, most of the time, the Audi A4 2.0TDI 170 hits the bullseye with unerring accuracy. When the facelifted version of the current A4 was first launched, buyers after a diesel with a bit of verve either chose the decent 140bhp 2. 0-litre TDI or a rather less enticing and notably thirstier 161bhp 2.5TDI unit. This was the weak card in the A4 hand and Ingolstadt had to react quickly, first ditching the 2.5 TDI for an altogether better 233bhp 3. 0 TDI unit from the A6 and then filling the gap to the 140bhp engine with the TDI 170 powerplant examined here. The A4 2.0-litre TDI 170 aims to stem the flow of dissidents who were previously defecting to BMWs very comparable 163bhp 320d, a car that, prior to the launch of this Audi, was quicker, more economical and - significantly for company car user choosers - way better in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. Now BMW no longer has this advantage. The Audis emissions figure of 154g/km all but matches that of the 3 Series and makes the old A4 2.5 TDIs 186g/km look overly excessive. It achieves this through a number of measures, not least of which is a clever four-cylinder direct injection system that makes better use of every drop of diesel. The injectors on all four cylinders are controlled by a single powerful electronic control unit (ECU) which carefully adapts the amount and mixture of fuel passing through into each cylinder. Having developed this, the engineers decided that the obvious next step was for each cylinder to have its own ECU unit; the fuel amount and mixture could then be even more carefully monitored and even greater efficiency achieved."Drive this 2.0-litre TDI 170 version and youll appreciate how much the Audi A4 has improved in the last few years"This engine also features Piezo injectors that precisely meter fuel delivery to provide more power and even stronger performance. Featuring a high-pressure pump and rail for the four cylinder engine, the Piezo system permits up to five separate amounts of fuel to be injected on each working stroke at an injection pressure of 1,600 bar - 250 bar more than with previous common rail systems. This helps to achieve the best possible fuel/air mixture and an even more efficient combustion process. Environmental impact is also minimised by a diesel particulate filter, which is fitted as standard and works in conjunction with the twin catalytic converters to maximise exhaust gas cleansing. The system needs no additives, and so will need no servicing throughout the lifespan of the car. This may all be a little too Open University for some but the net result is a car that anybody can enjoy, just as long as they can stump up at least £23,305. With 170bhp under the bonnet, it certainly doesnt hang around. The headline figure with this model isnt the power output but the maximum torque output of 258lb/ft. The BMW 330i, the Ford Focus ST, the Mercedes SL350, the Porsche Cayman S, and the Subaru Impreza WRX all fail to top this figure. Torque is simply defined as rotational force and its best to think of it as the engines muscularity. With this sort of torque on tap, you can rest assured that this Audi isnt going to get sand kicked in its face. Acceleration figures from rest never do a diesel car justice and the 0-60 figure of 8. 3 seconds sounds brisk rather than concussive. A more indicative test is the 30-70mph time through the gears and here the A4 is quick enough to give many of the cars listed above a real scare. With a top speed of 142mph, the A4 TDI 170 will have no issues about cruising at British motorway speeds and even on the cut and thrust of a two lane derestricted autobahn, it has more than enough mumbo to jet up to speed after dispatching a dawdling artic. The great thing about this powerplant is that the torque is almost omnipresent. That maximum figure is available from just 1,750rpm, little more than tickover. Running costs are kept on the manageable side with a fuel economy figure of 48.7mpg while a 154g/km emissions figure will mean this car will figure on the wanted lists of many business users with a £25k budget. The 750-mile effective range is also very attractive to those who want to get from A to B without having to stop off to pump fuel. The quattro models harness all that torque superbly, rarely troubling the traction control system even on the greasiest surfaces. Opt for one of these all-wheel drive variants and the price starts at £24,730. Slide inside and the door shuts with an authoritative thud that makes you want to open it up again and repeat the exercise. The sound could hardly be any more solid if it were coming from bank vault door. Nice touches include the digital display in the centre of the instrument binnacle which offers up useful titbits of information from the cars various systems, eliminating the need to glance down at the centre console displays. The dashboard cup-holder is a nice piece of work too, a damped slide-out draw thats uncomplicated but effective in that very Audi way. Im not sure if Ive ever used a cup holder in any car to actually hold a cup but its always one of the first things you reach for when inspecting a vehicle for the first time. Its another way of gauging those important first impressions and surely, if theyve taken the time to engineer a decent cup-holder, its reasonable to assume that sufficient care has also gone into the important bits. If you expect a lot from your car, take a look at the Audi A4 2.0-litre TDI 170. With 258lb ft in a car that weighs 1,380kg, it's also hardly surprising that mid-range punch is the most startling aspect to this new engine. The older138bhp diesel is hardly slow in this regard, but isn't a patch on the 168bhp version. 30-70mph is dispatched with commendable ease and on the motorway there's little else out there in terms of family hatches that can match this A3 for in-gear acceleration. If we had to criticise, it's that the turbo entry point is still a bit rushed so you get a great dump of torque at about 2,000rpm, one that the front wheels struggle with. But once you're through that point, the acceleration just keeps building. The beauty of this is that you can almost treat the A3 like an automatic as it pulls so well from most increments in the rev range. Leave it in sixth and away you go. Still, this thing ain't perfect. It's fast, yes, but as when it appears in the Golf, it's not as refined as I'd like. Other diesels don't have as much oil burner rattle as this. Plus, avoid an A3 with Sport suspension as it ruins the ride and this engine, although quick, is best used as a relaxation aid. Piers Ward Now share it More More Audi A3 cars we've driven...
